Stobi classical drama festival

Following the initiative of the Veles Theatre actors and for the purpose of preservation of the ancient theatre tradition, the ancient amphitheatre at Stobi has been the venue for summer plays since 1992. In 2001, this tradition grew into an International Classical Drama Festival, with the number of actors from all corners of the world increasing with each passing year. The Festival is an attraction not only to the citizens of Veles, but to the theatregoers from all of the country, which is evident from the great number of attendants averaging between 2,500 and 3,000 per show. The Festival traditionally presents awards for best play, director and best actors. The ancient stage at Stobi is particularly tempting for the actors, thus having an opportunity to create true spectacles amidst that antique ambient of the ancient amphitheatre and revive the plays by of Sophocles, Aristophanes, Euripides and many other ancient playwrights.
